The Wayzata West Metro Chamber is pleased to have Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt join us for the 2025 kick-off of the Leadership Luncheon Series in January. Sheriff Witt will share an overview of the Sheriff's Office and give us her insights on the responsibilities and services provided throughout Hennepin County. Public safety has always been a keen interest of business and community leaders. Come hear about her vision and mission for the Sheriff's Office and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead.
Sheriff Witt's bio:
Dawanna S. Witt was elected Hennepin County Sheriff in November 2022 and sworn in on January 3, 2023, becoming the first woman and person of color to hold the position. She campaigned on her years of experience and a platform of safer communities, improved law enforcement recruitment and retention, reform, collaboration, and transparency.
Born in Chicago and raised in Minneapolis, Sheriff Witt excelled in school despite becoming a mother at 15. She earned scholarships, including the Justice Alan Page Scholarship, and volunteered in community organizations.
After studying chemical dependency and family therapy in college, she began her career in the nonprofit sector before joining law enforcement as a detention deputy in 2000. She went on to serve in various roles at the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, eventually becoming its first female captain.
Witt earned dual master's degrees and worked at the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office from 2019, overseeing Adult Detention and Court Services. In 2022, she ran on a platform of safer communities, improved law enforcement practices, and transparency.
Sheriff Witt is married with two daughters, three grandchildren, and serves on several boards and organizations.
